You should check with your public library, but you might be able to use Overdrive, Libby, Hoopla, Kanopy, PressReader, or PlayBack, which are all digital services. You might be able to get discounts for zoos and museums and visiting your local national parks.
Going to the library, there are all kinds of community programs and meetings and things to keep you in touch with your friends and neighbors. There’s learning opportunities and fun club activities. Plus tons of books to read, audiobooks and music to listen to, and even DVDs and Blu-rays you can borrow.
The public library is great. And every single one of them deserves funding because they really help people simply by existing.
There are a lot of libraries that you can join online to use their digital content. You don’t have to go in person if you don’t want to leave your house. And if your local library isn’t the best, there are plenty of libraries in other counties and states that will let you get a library card with them for a small fee. And that library card will open a whole world to you.
I honestly feel sorry for all those unschooled kids or the "homeschooled" kids that aren’t really receiving a real education because their parents are instead purposefully keeping them isolated and under their control. I put "homeschooled" in quotes, because real homeschooling is different from whatever is happening in some of those homes.
We see all kinds of stuff in influencer videos and "family channel" videos, and we are left chilled to the bone. But the worst thing is the stuff happening off screen. And if they’re so wild and horrifying with the stuff they’re willing to show? OMG.
Give those kids some library cards.
And like, for normal people looking at the financial difficulties caused by rampant tariffs and the Iran war (or "conflicts," or "difficulties," or whatever else they decide to call it so they don’t have to follow any laws), it’s hard to justify paying for books and streaming services. And the library is really there to fill in those gaps.
People deserve entertainment and laughter and joy. Everything doesn’t have to be and shouldn’t be horrible all the time. Especially for children.
And what I like about Libby is I don’t have to deal with worrying about overdue books anymore. They are automagically returned on their own. And if I’m not done with them, I can borrow them again when I want to.
The public library is beautiful. We should all support the public library.
