I’ve been enjoying reading again

I’ve always read. I’m constantly taking in content that’s in a written language. But I haven’t really been reading canon content for a while.

I read all the books. Then I stopped.

That didn’t mean they didn’t continue to make new books.

I just haven’t had the mental resources to read the canon material. Not when the fics are all laid out there.

But recently I’ve been enjoying Chinese novels.

Like this one right now:

  • Dude, don’t test someone’s blindness by throwing a basketball at them!!! WTF is wrong with you? Who raised you??? * He’s got a serious anger issue. It’s a diagnosis he carries. * He’s very rich, but currently a bit of a family disgrace.
  • She just had eye surgery after being blind for years. So she’s just starting to get her sight back and has to wear sunglasses. * She whacks him with her cane when he tries to snatch her sunglasses.

Her complete disgust with him is causing him to change and become a better person.

I enjoy drama stories.

I hate drama in real life.

Anyways.

  1. Haha! Made me smile. What is the novel?
    Thanks for sharing.
I used to read reams of fanfic, but I find it a chore to discover ones that are complete, of significant length, and read maturely written.

    1. The novel is called “Bizarre Love.” I was really involved with the first like 4 chapters where she wakes up after her rebirth and there’s interspersed accounts about how her face was burned and how she died. But then it didn’t really hold my attention so I skipped to the end and saw they had a happy ending and moved on.

      For Chinese novels, I enjoyed:
      – Transmigrated Into a Big Boss to Snatch Away the Cannon Fodder (m/m), by I Had a Dream Once
      – Dao of the Salted Fish (m/m), by Bafflinghaze
      – I’m the City Lord of the Last Days (m/m), by Yu Qiongbao Rimu
      – Stone Age Husband Raising Journal (m/m), by Jue Jue
      – Tyrant Pampering Wife Diary (m/m), by Yi Ri Zhi Qian
      – Transmigrating Into the Reborn Male Lead’s Ex-Boyfriend (m/m)
      – The Film Emperor’s Daily Live Cooking Broadcast (m/m), by Zui Ran Qing Ge
      – Married Thrice to Salted Fish (m/m)
      – Busy Farming In the Last Days (m/m), by Nuo Nuo
      – I Ran Away After I was Forced Into a Love Polygon (m/m)
      – We’re All Especially Sympathizing With That Man (m/m)
      – Losing Money to be a Tycoon (no romance), by Inebriation-seeking Blue Shirt
      – Shock! The Real Daughter Made the Transmigrator Girl Cry (f/m), by Lemon Head
      – Wonderful Life After Exchanging Fate (f/m)
      – Counterattack of the Cannon Fodder Chambermaid (f/m), by Jia Mian De Sheng Yan/Mask Feast
      – She Came to My Concert (f/m), by Qiao Yao
      – I Became the Stepmother of My Ex-Husband (f/m)–complete version can be found at https://thisseatisbored.com/i-became-the-stepmother-of-my-ex-husband
      – You Don’t Understand the Pain of Being Popular, by Xue Ling

You can find out where they’ve been translated at Novel Updates, though it’s a little jank. I started by reading completed projects on Chrysanthemum Garden, and then there’s Knoxt, and now I’m reading machine translated novels at MTL Novel (though I turn off my browser’s javascript and I don’t really recommend the site because I don’t think their security is that great).

I know some people really hate reading machine translated stuff, but I just skim over the oddities and absorb the story itself. It’s just funny, cause like there was one where the girl made potstickers and it described the “crispy foreskin” after she fried the potstickers. There’s a few oddities like that. Plus pronouns are usually a mess because the Chinese language only has one word that covers both she and he.

And yeah, for fanfic I mostly like long plot-driven stories. Stuff like “The Prophet From Maine (GoT),” “The Prancing Stag (GoT),” “Pick a God and Find Your Justice (GoT)”, “The War Is Far From Over Now (Marvel Cinematic Universe),” “The Guiding of Death (Iron Man – All Media Types)”, and “The Lone and Level Sands (Alien (Prequel Movies)).”

  3. I enjoy drama in fiction when a bad guy is about to get what’s coming to him in a big confrontation — like in Hard Times when Bounderby’s mom shows up and starts talking about his gold spoon. But when I’m cringing vicariously over something a character I vicariously identify with is doing, that’s going to result in a justifiable blowup from someone else, I really hate it.

    1. Yeah, I’m not into that either. I prefer characters that can solve their own problems without leaning into goofiness.
