Because we know you’re not coming in after the first guest leaves to actually clean the place. You’re trusting that that previous guest did a deep clean and not a passive aggressive barely anything pass through.

I don’t want to sleep on dirty sheets.

I don’t want to be told that I can’t wear shoes indoors, while at the same time the host doesn’t clean the carpets. What if the previous guest had foot fungus?!?

There was a big to-do in Chinese influencer circles where there was a company that allowed customers to rent name brand clothes to use for their pictures and videos. And there was a pair of tights that were shared hundreds if not thousands of times. And how did they find out that those tights weren’t being sanitized between uses? Foot fungus.

Everyone got highly communicable foot fungus.

So when an Airbnb host requires that people remove their shoes and they’ve made the choice to line their rental property with wall-to-wall carpets or rugs? Ugh.

If you’re going to require people remove their shoes in your rental property, provide slippers. You can get them in a variety of sizes, choosing materials that can be regularly washed and disinfected, then wrap them so you can know if someone opened them and handled them so they can be re-disinfected before the next person comes along. Your floors are protected. Your guests are protected. And you can know you’ve done your best to keep people safe, clean, and happy in your rental property.

And don’t get me started on the idea of people owning rental properties bitching about the hardships of owning rental properties.

I don’t even own one house. Don’t come to me bitching about your SECOND house, or your third house, or your fourth house, or your… Your problems are not my problems, and your problems are making me jealous and angry at you.

Like, you’re a renter on Airbnb. You are definitely in it for the profits. You aren’t even a landlord. You’re an unlicensed hotel that doesn’t do a very good job because you’re expecting your guests to also be the cleaning staff.

And there’s something about the idea of going on a vacation, staying in an Airbnb that I’ve had to heavily check for hidden cameras and microphones, and then on the last day I’ve gotta scramble to clean the whole place before check out at 10 or 11 a.m. that just doesn’t seem fun to me.

I don’t even know that I would be awake at 10 a.m., much less at 7 or 8 so there’s time enough to run a full load of laundry and the dishwasher while I’m deep cleaning the bathroom and kitchen and making sure all the furniture and knickknacks are exactly where the host originally had them.

I’ve seen the videos. I’ve heard the commentary. The idea that I’ll leave somewhere, and a few hours later someone will be going through with a camera talking about me and how I used too much or too little toilet paper during my stay? Ugh.

These hosts angry at Airbnbs new rules–which are basically "You can’t require guests to take garbage off property" and "You can’t require guests to wash bedding or other laundry"–are angry because they are scheduling their guests too close together. They have people checking out at 10 a.m. and then they’ve got the next guests showing up at 1 p.m.

They get so angry when they do their walk through and find out someone left a speck of garbage on the coffee table. Why? Because they actually have to clean the place before their next guests arrive, and they don’t want to. Never mind that they’re being paid a $200 cleaning fee.

For $200, I would expect the place to be clean and sanitary when I arrive, and that the place would be cleaned for me when I leave. I’m not going to trash the place, but don’t expect me to do chores on my vacation.

The nice thing about a hotel is you get a room with a clean(ish) bed and bathroom. There might be a microwave and a mini-fridge you can use. There’s a TV and towels and there might be a continental breakfast. And someone else cleans the place for you when you leave.

So the very idea of someone opening what’s basically an unlicensed hotel, making a lot of money renting it out, then complaining that they have to clean the place between guests?!? And then they get to rate you after you leave?

Nah. Airbnb hosts need to get a grip on themselves. Realize that they’re in the hospitality business. And that the money doesn’t come for free, it requires them to actually clean the houses they’re renting out and not be bitches about it.

And if they’re claiming cleaning services on their taxes? They better have receipts showing they actually hired cleaners. Otherwise their irate customers could probably file some anonymous tips against them and they could be looking at some financial trouble.

~Harper Kingsley

https://paypal.me/harperkingsley.

https://patreon.com/harperkingsley.

https://ko-fi.com/harperwck.

https://www.youtube.com/c/HarperKingsley.

https://amazon.com/shop/harperkingsley0.
https://www.harperkingsley.net/blog.
https://kimichee.com.

https://harperkingsley.bsky.social.
https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/HarperKingsley.

https://www.everand.com/author/262822558/Harper-Kingsley.
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/author/harper-kingsley.
https://books.apple.com/us/author/harper-kingsley/id444850597.

Airbnb hosts crashing out over the new rules sound so fucking stupid.
