The purposeful misuses and the changed meanings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jealousy&#8221; is more violent than &#8220;envy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pop culturification of things like &#8220;I&#8217;m so jealous of you!&#8221; has done great harm. Where it&#8217;s used as though it&#8217;s a compliment, when really jealousy is a threat.<\/p>\n<p>Envy is seeing a happy couple and wishing for the same for yourself. You admire without feeling the need to interact, steal, or destroy.<\/p>\n<p>Jealousy is thinking &#8220;That should be mine.&#8221; That life. That jewelry. That family. You see it, you want it, and you go out to take it, even if it harms other people. And if you can&#8217;t get it, you&#8217;d rather see it destroyed than continue to be enjoyed by the person you&#8217;re jealous of.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m so envious of you&#8221; is a compliment. It&#8217;s &#8220;I see how great you&#8217;re doing and I admire that. I&#8217;m glad you&#8217;re doing so well.&#8221; with no intention to interfere.<\/p>\n<p>I see you. I acknowledge you. I&#8217;m glad for you.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s benign envy.<\/p>\n<p>Jealousy is harsh and abrasive. Yet somehow people have taken to using jealousy in place of envy, and envy has gotten the bad reputation.<\/p>\n<p>I saw discourse about that Dog Food Lunch lady.
